What is Reiki?

[showmyads]
It’s been known for thousands of years in many different religions that laying your hands on someone and praying for them can help them. If you are a devout believer the sickness of the person can be changed due to:
a) the law of attraction. Believe someone can be healed and they will
b) the act of God. Have faith that God will heal them and they will
c) moving between parallel universes. Shift into an alternate universe where your loved one recovers
d) transferring your personal energy. Your spiritual power and energy is used to help the person to recover
e) transferring your love. The person receives your love and is given extra strength so that their physical body will induces personal healing
f) channeling the energy of the universe. Your love for the person helps you give them more of the universal energy so that they recover
g) forgiveness. The person may be wracked with guilt and is killing themselves through their willpower. Receiving your love and attention gives their life meaning and they no longer want to kill themselves so they recover.
h) Removing the demon. The demon that had control of them disappears surrounded by the energy and love of their family.
i) your positive energy dissipates the negative energy that has been surrounding them and they recover
i) and many more!

So, even with the simple laying on of hands, there seems to be a myriad of ways that it works.

In the 1920s a Japanese buddhist named Mikao Usui had a revelation and came up with a new, modern method of laying on of hands. Palm healing or ‘Reiki’ was born.

Over the years this has split off into many different forms of Reiki and the traditional Japanese Reiki created by Usui is still much a mystery, though more has become available since the 90s. Hawayo Takata developed a more procedural form of Reiki and took it to Hawaii where it spread throughout the world. Western Reiki is the most commonly found form of the craft and is based on her methodology.

Here are several descriptions of Reiki. They’re all true, depending on how someone is performing it.

Reiki is the laying on of hands using the personal power of the reiki therapist to induce healing.
Reiki is when a reiki master remotely heals someone through directing their power to them so that it activates the healing process in their body.
Reiki is when a reiki practitioner takes the universal energy and directs it to heal someone putting their hands on their chakras.
Reiki is when you put your hands slightly above the affected areas of a persons body and hold your hands over that area, concentrating on healing them, without touching them.
Reiki concentrates on breathing and focusing your energy in a meditative state to induce healing. This may involve simply laying your hands at certain Chakra points and placing your hands on particular parts of the body to induce healing. Depending on who’s practicing it could seem mystical or procedural.

If you wish to learn Reiki it usually requires that you go through 3 levels to learn the craft and be taught by a Reiki master directly so that he/she can transfer energies and awaken the energy healing skill inside you – a process known as attunement. After going through this proces you’re also able to intuitively sense where the problems in the body are and focus on healing that area.

I don’t know about other countries but in the UK you can actually get government medical insurance to practice Usui Reiki Shiki Ryōhō, a popular form of Reiki in that country.

In the next post I’ll quickly go over the 3 levels of Reiki.
